How to Jump a Car With Jumper Cables? Step-by-Step Guide

You never know when you need to jump a car in the middle of nowhere, but here is how to do it if you have to.

What Do You Need to Jump a Car?

Jumping a car doesn't require an entirely different and stable vehicle. You can do it with a portable jump battery and a pair of jumper cables.

Apart from a dead battery, signs like your engine cranking to start or your battery catching a cold is when you need to jump-start your vehicle.

How Do You Know If You Need to Jump a Car?

The Process

Jump-starting a car is usually a six-step process if you have the required tools. Otherwise, you may need to tow your vehicle to a mechanic. Anyways, here's how to jump a car.

Once parked, pop their bonnets to spot the batteries and prepare the jumper cables by straightening and untangling them.

The positive terminals are marked red, and the negatives are black. Connect the positive (+) red clamp to the red terminal of the dead battery first and to the working battery after that.

Finally, connect the first negative (-) clamp to the black terminal of the working battery with the second negative clamp hooked onto a metal surface of the car, which should be unpainted.

After connecting the cables to the ends of both the batteries, you need to start the dead and working car for an instant jump. Leaving them idle for a minute will also recharge the dead battery.

Now that you have jumped your battery, you need to disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order of how you connected them, which prevents any possible mishaps.

Now start the car with a not-anymore dead battery, and let it run for at least 5 minutes. Or better, driving it for 15 minutes would bring it into momentum and maintain it.

Try again by swapping the ends of jumper cables. If that doesn't help, call your mechanic for further assistance or tow your car directly to them.
