Electric Vehicles – Do Electric Cars Have Transmissions?

What does a Transmission do in a Vehicle?

A transmission is assumed to be one of the important components of vehicles. It is the power that moves the engine through the wheels. Transmission is of multiple types, many of them are automatic and some are manual. However, manual transmission requires some extra steps from the driver to function the vehicle appropriately. 

Transmission is mounted over a chassis of a vehicle and its functions depend on the type of transmission but to some extent, a transmission adjusts the ratio of the gear between the engine and driving wheel when the car speeds up or slows down.

The transmission further helps to disconnect the engine from the drive wheel when the car stops. Here, the engine becomes idle while the wheels are not moving. With transmission, your vehicle also gets quick acceleration when the car is at rest and cuts down on wear to start the engine more slowly.

Types of Transmissions in a Vehicle

Manual Transmission

With the manual transmission, the driver has to apply multiple steps from selecting the correct gear to engaging and disengaging the clutch. For this purpose, the transmission uses a pressure plate, flywheel, and clutch to engage and disengage the transmission.

The clutch acts like a sandwich between the pressure plate and flywheel and is connected to the transmission shaft.

Dual Clutch

The dual-clutch transmission consists of two clutches, which can be wet or dry. In these types of clutches, one operates even gears and the other operates the odd. 2,4,6 & 1,3,5 respectively.

Dual transmission cars are rarely found in modern race cars and were most common in old cars. Cars that have this dual-clutch automated clutch transmission, are referred to as double-clutch transmission where the clutch engagement, bridging the gap, and shifting are controlled by a computer between automated and manual transmission.

Automated Transmission

The automated transmission is also called AMT sometimes with a computerized controlling shifting and engaging of the clutch. Normally, AMT or automated transmissions are found in heavy-duty trucks.

Synchronized Transmission

Synchronized transmission is also referred to as constant mesh transmission that helps the drive gear, cluster gear, and main shaft in moving constantly. With the synchronized transmission the need for pads to minimize the speed of the vehicle/gear becomes necessary. But this reduces the double-clutching need to slow down gears.

Automatic Transmissions

How does automatic transmission work? The process that differentiates between automated and manual transmission is the function that is involved. This means that the process that powers manual transmission to operate appropriately happened within transmission in an automated transmission.

Automated transmission systems do not use clutches to change gears; instead, they depend on the torque power that changes gears. The first semi-automated transmission (it is called semi-automated because it had a clutch to assist) has been around since the early 1990s.   • Direct Shift gearbox – also referred to as DSG, having two clutches which disengage alternatively when the gears are changed. Through DSG, drivers can experience fast shifting and smooth acceleration.
  • Hydraulic – Hydraulic term is used for pressure or the fluid that is present inside the automatic transmission.

In electric cars and vehicles, a mono-gear system is used. In electric motors of EVs, power bands enable engineers to utilize the single-speed transmission for transferring the engine power to the driving wheels. This process can be integrated with a bolt-on or a motor.

Gears on Electric Cars

Electric motors in electric cars quickly produce torque energy when it is compared to combustion engines installed internally.
