Can you get car insurance without a driver’s license?

To operate a motor vehicle on the streets of the United States, you need to have a driver’s license. Not only having a driver’s license is important, but it is also mandatory to have your vehicle insured.

An important question is:  can you get car insurance without a driver’s license? Well, it’s possible, but the process involved is quite tedious.

Most of the states in the U.S. have made it mandatory for drivers to have car insurance. A car insurance policy provides you with liability coverage in case of any damage you may incur due to an accident.

It is important to know what kind of car insurance coverage you will get from your insurance agent; in case you don’t have a valid driver’s license.

Car insurance without driver’s license

As mentioned earlier, every state requires you to have liability car insurance at least, but is it necessary to have a driver’s license for car insurance? The answers to these questions may be positive but the process is complex.

There are no driving laws in place in the United States that prevent you from buying an automobile if you don’t have a driver’s license. However, you must register the vehicle in the state once you have purchased it. For this, you may need to provide your photograph and car insurance details.

On the contrary, car insurance companies do not allow a driver to have insurance if he doesn’t have a driver’s license as they see the driver as a threat to society, if he is not legally registered as a driver in the state record.

Oftentimes, when you submit an application for getting car insurance policy, the insurer may ask you to provide the driver’s license number. If you fail to provide the same, your application can be rejected.

What if you want to insure your car without a driver’s license?

If you don’t have a driver’s license, but you have purchased a car, the insurance agent might not provide you with an insurance policy. In this case, you can get your car insured on someone else’s driver’s license, mentioning that individual as the primary driver. The individual must have a valid driver’s license, and must be over 21 years of age.

Once you get your valid driver’s license you can transfer everything including the auto insurance and the registration number in your name. You can also name yourself as a primary driver.

Since you have got the driver’s license for the first time, you will probably get a higher insurance policy rate. It means that you will have to pay a higher cost in premium fee.

Why you need car insurance without a driver’s license?

It may sound uncomfortable to suggest one to get car insurance without a driver’s license. But in some cases, it is in the best interest of the car owner to get one.

You can have a car insurance without a license for following reasons:

  • You have got a learner’s permit only
  • Your license might be suspended and you are required to file an FR-44 or SR-22 form to restore it
  • You want to ensure a collectible vehicle for your family
  • You have a car that is driven by chauffeur or caregiver
  • You want to co-sign the insurance policy for an under-age driver

You got a learner’s permit

Teenagers with the provisional license or the learner’s permit need to have a car insurance policy, even if they are not legally allowed to drive. Generally, student drivers learn to drive on the vehicle registered in their parent’s name, which is supposed to be insured already. The parents should add their ward’s name as a provisional driver in their insurance policy.

You have a collectible vehicle

If you have a collectible vehicle, you still need to get it insured with the minimum liability coverage.

Your license is suspended

If your license is suspended due to serious convictions including DUIs or hit-and-run charges, then it’s certain that you won’t get your license back unless you pay your liability and show proof of SR-22 insurance to the court.

The SR-22 is a legal document that proves that you have a car insurance policy with the minimum requirement your state has established.

Registering a car without a license

To register your car in the state where you reside, you don’t specifically need a driver’s license. In many states, you can get your car registered, just by submitting the related documents to the concerned authorities.

Once you get the license, getting your car registered in your state is relatively easy.
